Top-seeded Roger Federer beat Ivo Karlovic of Croatia 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 Wednesday to reach the third round of the Paris Masters and earn a chance to avenge a recent loss to David Nalbandian. The 12-time Grand Slam champion has reached the final of every tournament he’s entered since losing to Filippo Volandri in the third round of the Rome Masters on May 10.

Roger Federer should have seen it coming. One by one, David Nalbandian was picking off the best that tennis has to offer.
Nalbandian beat Federer 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 on Sunday to win the Madrid Masters. On his way to the final against the world’s top-ranked player, Nalbandian also defeated No. 2 Rafael Nadal and No. 3 Novak Djokovic.
‘I usually play better in the finals, but it had something to do with the way he played today,’ said Federer, the tournament’s defending champion. ‘I guess when you beat Djokovic and Nadal back-to-back, you come into the final here very ready.’ Read more

Roger Federer beat Jarkko Nieminen 6-3, 6-4 Sunday to win his second straight Swiss Indoors and clinch the No. 1 ranking for the fourth consecutive year. Federer joins Pete Sampras, Jimmy Connors, John McEnroe and Ivan Lendl as the only men’s players to end the season ranked No. 1 four or more times since the inception of the ATP rankings in 1973.
