“At this point I have still not physically recovered 100 percent from the U.S. Open and Davis Cup. “Thus my doctor advised me that in an effort to avoid the risk of serious injury, I should not play a tournament for at least 10 days.”

Roger Federer has pulled out of the Japan Open tennis tournament. “I’m so disappointed that I have to withdraw from the Japan Open,” Federer said in a statement released by organizers Friday. “I have not physically recovered 100 percent from the U.S. Open and Davis Cup.” Federer said that he was told by his doctor that in order to avoid the risk of serious injury he should not play in a tournament…

Czechs beat Federer-led Switzerland 3-2 (AP)

Radek Stepanek beat Stanislas Wawrinka 7-6 (3), 6-3, 7-6 (4) Sunday to give the Czech Republic a 3-2 win over Roger Federer-led Switzerland and a place in Davis Cup’s World Group. Federer, playing in the Davis Cup for the first time this year, evened the series at 2-2 earlier in the day by beating Tomas Berdych 7-6 (5), 7-6 (10), 6-3.

Federer beats Berdych, Swiss tie Czechs (AP)

Roger Federer beat Tomas Berdych 7-6 (5), 7-6 (10), 6-3 Sunday to even Switzerland’s Davis Cup playoff against the Czech Republic at 2-2. Radek Stepanek faced Stanislas Wawrinka in the decisive match later Sunday. Berdych broke Federer for a 2-1 lead in the first set but failed to convert a set point in the ninth game.

Roger Federer lost at doubles with Swiss teammate Yves Allegro on Saturday, giving the Czech Republic a 2-1 lead in their Davis Cup playoff. Tomas Berdych and Radek Stepanek saved a match point in the third set before winning 3-6, 5-7, 7-6 (7), 6-4, 6-4 to put the Czechs one victory from a spot in next year’s World Group.
