Tennis world number one Roger Federer, seven-times Formula One world champion Michael Schumacher and top golfer Tiger Woods are all in the running for a third Laureus World Sportsman of the Year Award in April. via CNN
Roger Federer is a day away from officially breaking the record for most weeks as the top-ranked player in men’s tennis, and he’s already excited.
Next Monday (26th February 2007) Roger Federer will break Jimmy Connors’ record of most consecutive weeks at number one in the ATP rankings. As Federer holds a huge lead in the rankings it is not likely that he will be challenged for the top position for quite some time.
The ATP rankings system has been in place since August of 1973. In that time 23 different men have held the top ranking. Pete Sampras who held the number one ranking for a total of 286 weeks holds the record for total weeks at number 1. Federer needs to stay number one for around another 2 years 5 months to break Sampras’ record. What are the odds that he can stay number one for that long?
